Story: BROKEN…Episode 11 || Written by Ifeoluwa Oni

Two weeks after, Tade summoned up courage to meet Tito and talk about the past. He decided to pay her a visit during break in the second branch. He got to her office and knocked briefly on her door before she ushered him in.
She stood up immediately she saw him, “Mr man, I can’t recall inviting you to my office. How may I help you?”
“Tito, I don’t like the way you are behaving to me. Since we knew each other before, I expected more from you.”
“More? Did you just say that? More as in how? Do you expect me to open my hands wide to embrace you for hurting me so much in the past? Or should I kneel down to express my gratitude to you for breaking my heart? You really are out of your mind.”
“Why using a cuss language? Are you no longer a Christian? A Christian should learn to forgive and live beyond the past.”
Tito clapped her hands together, “Ride on Pastor, I am really enjoying your preaching.”
He shook his head, “I am not preaching to you Tito. I am just stating the obvious. Forgiveness is one of those essential qualities that must be practiced by Christians. If you don’t learn to forgive, you will also be affected because you will not have peace of mind.”
Her hands akimbo, “You know what? You have overstayed your welcome.”
“Please Tito, I still love you.”
“You said what?” Tito asked as if she has just heard the forbidden.
“I still love you.”
Tito laughed hysterically. “Love me ke?” She folded her hands across her chest and she wore a little frown on her face.
“Do you want to hear the truth?” he nodded. “I hate you. I can’t imagine myself loving a loser like you. Get out of my office before I disgrace you.”
SEVEN MONTHS LATER
“You should have told him earlier. When are you plsnning to tell him?”
“I don’t know. Something in me tells me that he would leave me if he gets to know about my past. I don’t want to suffer another heart break.”
“Imagine what you are saying. At least, you will satisfy your conscience. It is then left to him to decide whether he will leave you or not.”
“Keziah, I love Eric and I don’t want him to slip away from me because of my past.”
She took her hands into hers, “If he is yours, he will stay. If you don’t tell him now, you will just create a big problem for yourself in the future.”
“Alright. I will tell him.”
“Make it soon Tito. Tell him soonest.”
………
“Hold on, I am coming.” Mrs Adelokun went to the door to open it.
“OH my God, Tito dear.” She hugged Tito. “It is such a surprise to see you. Eric didn’t tell me you were coming today.”
“Good morning mummy.” Tito knelt down.
“Pele, omo dada. How is everyone at home?”
“They are fine ma.” Tito went to the freezer to put the fruits se brought along with her there. Her mother had taught her and her siblings not to go empty handed whenever they pay people visits.
“Let me go and call Eric.”
Some minutes later, Mrs. Adelokun came downstairs with Eric. Tito stood up to hug Eric. Tito never allowed Eric to touch her, it took Eric a whole lot of time before Tito finally started hugging him.
“You never told me that you were coming today. What if I was not around?”
They walked to a couch to sit. “Thank God you are around.”
Mrs Adelokun feigned a cough to get their attention, “I was preparing to go out for a wedding ceremony befoe you arrived. I will go upstairs now to put some finishing touches to my dressing.”
“You are already late ma, it is past 10 already.”
“I am not the one that will join the couples together jare.” They all laughed. Mrs Adelokun left the house some minutes later. Tito and Eric chatted for a while before she spilled the beans.
“Eric, I have come to see you for a particular reason.”
“What is it about?”
“There are things I should have told you but I was just afraid to tell you.”
He moved forward on the couch he was sitting on. “Tell me everything.”
A tear escaped from her right eye which was obvious to Eric. “Why the tear?”
She ignored his question and she started talking. “During my undergraduate days in school, I was raped.”
He arched his brow, “Raped?” He held his head in his hands. It numbed Eric when he heard of what happened to her before. It was not because he was not going to marry a virgin, but because of the sudden realization that the girl he loves the most has lived the horrors of rape. He never had an idea that her past had been so traumatic.
Eric stood up from the couch he was sitting on and joined Tito in the double seater couch she was sitting on. He took her two hands in his and assured her that he did not give a damn about her past. It took him about an hour before he could convince her that he really did not.
Eric now understood the reason why she was cold when they started their relationship. During the initial stages of their relationship, she was moody, contrary to her jovial nature and very insecure around him. Eric always found this draining and tiring, he however did not break up with her because he was sure it is the will of God for them to be together.
Eric decided to use that opportunity to ask her about Tade. He cleared his throat and Tito looked at him expectantly, “Was it Tade that raped you?”
“No.”
“What do you guys have between each other in the past?”
“Tade was my boyfriend before I was raped, when he got to know that I was raped, he said a lot of mean things to me ignoring my feelings, he broke up with me. Since then, I never set my eyes on him again, not until that day that I saw him in your office. The instance I saw him, I felt hatred for him. At that time of the incidence, I had thought he would love and look after me the more, not abandoning me like he did.
Eric took both her hands in his and squeezed them warmly, “I want to assure you today that I will love and look after you. I will protect you, God helping me.” He paused briefly before continuing.
“Tito, I want you to forgive Tade. To hare is human and to forgive is divine. He only did what he did to you in the past because he is human. He is not perfect, it is only God that is perfect. So, in essence, I want you both to reconcile.”
Tito sighed before she spoke, “I have heard you Eric, I have forgiven him.”
“That is good but I still want you to make it known to him. Tell him in person. I will suggest you organise an avenue for you both to meet.”
“”Alright, I will call him now to know his schedule. Can you please give me his number?”
He searched through his phone for Tade’s number. He called it out to her. She dialled the number, it was picked up at the second ring.
“Speaking?”
“Hello Tade, this is Tito speaking.”
“Waow, this is unbelievable. How are you doing?”
“I am fine, thank you. I called to know if you will be around tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow is Sunday and I am going to church.”
“I know, I am going to church too. I mean in the evening.”
“Okay, let’s make it 4 p.m and where are we meeting?”
“Any place that is convenient for you.”
“What of Eat more cafeteria?”
“Let’s meet there by 4 p.m then. I hope you have stopped that habit of keeping people waiting like you always do then.”
Tito ignored his question. Why is he making reference to the past, at least they have something going on between them.” We will see by 4 p.m tomorrow.
“How far?” asked Eric after she dropped her call.
“We are meeting tomorrow at Eat more restaurant by 4 p.m.”
“I will come and pick you up at home then.”
……..
Around 2 p.m the following day, Tade started looking for what to put on for the meeting with Tito. He emptied his whole suitcase, searching for what to put on. He stood looking at all the collections of clothing he had, wondering what to wear. ‘Am I really nervous?’ He asked himself. Yes, he was actually nervous a little. He just don’t know what to put on. ‘I don’t want the situation where I will look overdressed for the meeting, so I won’t send a wrong signal. And in the same vein, I don’t want to look too casual for the meeting.’ He thought within himself. He later settled for a stripped polo tee-shirt ad a dark-blue jean.
The clothes issues having been settled, what shoes would he put on? He had learnt early enough that shoes say a lot about you and are one of those things that people will check out. He decided to put on his black snickers.
Tito and Eric got to the cafeteria around 3:15 p.m. Tade Was not yet there then, she had made up her mind that she would get there before him.
Some minutes to four, Tade got to the front of the cafeteria. He saw Eric and Tito through the glass door and he got angry immediately. ‘Why would he follow her here now?’ He contemplated leaving the place before they noticed him but he was curious to know what she had in mind. ‘Why won’t this oga just mind his business?’ Anger was evident on his face as he entered the cafeteria.
